Greetings! Hope the weather is fine where you are! Over here, it’s like this:
Even with an extra day on the calendar, I’m struggling to meet my self-created deadline for a monthly post. Nothing has come together.
I felt badly about that until I realized: I don’t usually post in February. In the eleven years I’ve been writing, I’ve skipped the 2nd month of the year seven times. In 2022, I missed this month by three days (even though I called it February 31st). Back in 2013, I cheated by joining a “Wordless Wednesday” campaign to assuage my writer’s block worries:
I should just build in a break next year and officially submit to February’s call for silence. I truly love this month: not much is happening, we’re back to regular routines, the extra holiday and year-beginning obligations have dissipated, we can enjoy beautiful desert weather and are readying for a spring vacation. This February feels like all the others…which can be good and bad, I suppose.
I’ll leave you with two things that make me smile:
This rare February post from 2014 in which I found a few positive things about being 12 years past my son’s autism diagnosis (still holds true, 22 years on):
And, this:
My desk mate, Angus (aka Moo-in’ McGregor), who reminds me that life can be both messy and cute.
That’s the view from here - more soon!
Angus!! I agree, I think there is power in a silent February — in doing what feels natural instead of forced. But I’m grateful to read your words today, old and new.
I had to laugh at February 31st 😂 a scheduled February off sounds like a wonderful idea though. Here in NZ it feels a bit different I think as it's Summer in February and school is just starting for the year. But I can totally see this for July! Loved reading the throwback post too, always inspiring and gives me hope x
